Exploring political and socio-cultural dynamics of musical representations for inclusion and exclusion processes

Workshop
Fr-Sa, 13.-14. Juli 2018
Kulturwissenschaftliches Kolleg (Bischofsvilla)
Otto-Adam-Str. 5, 78467 Konstanz

In this workshop/colloquium, twelve international scholars convene to discuss issues of music and migration/flight/refuge as incited by the so-called “refugee crisis,” which since 2015 daily captures our attention. The workshop participants focus on political and socio-cultural dynamics of musical representations of processes of inclusion and exclusion, their variability, the temporality of migration experiences, the complexities of authorial agency in relation to larger discourses of migration and refuge, and the shifting contours of such discursive debate when projecting the migrants’ voices into musical forms. The aim of this workshop is to connect individuals who investigate how musical practices and musical repertoire can function as tools for analyzing intersections between musical representations, medialization, refugee advocacy, and interculturalism, as well as how musical practices foster affective citizenship, inclusion, and highlight issues of gender/gender inequality. More broadly, participants strive to develop insights into how a musical lens—as research approach and theoretical framework—can (or cannot) provide policy-relevant impulses for recent socio-political debates on the perceived threat of immigration. An important question that most workshop participants further ask is, how we, as scholars, teachers, and practitioners are aware of and formulate our ethical responsibilities and roles when working with and representing the voices of those momentarily powerless. Within the workshop’s theme of performing migration, scholars share their musical expertise and experiences with specific populations (such as Syrians, Senegalese, Afghans, Greek, and Moroccan).
